The Rise of Woodworking Machines

Around the turn of the nineteenth century, woodworking machines began to emerge. While certain ancient sawing machines powered by hand, water, or wind were utilised in various locations during the Middle Ages, the forerunners to today's woodworking machines were not built until the end of the eighteenth century. Sir Samuel Bentham, who created the principle of rotary cutting, which is utilised in all modern planers, jointers, shapers, and moulders, made the most important inventions in this field in England. Bentham's machines were primitive by today's standards, with merely hefty oak frames fastened together to hold the cutting element and no hydraulics. Woodworking machines built completely of metal were not invented until the middle of the nineteenth century. This primitive machinery was first utilised in jails, where it allowed unskilled individuals to plane, saw, and bore as well as experienced woodworkers, and considerably faster. The machines were such a success that they were adopted into shipyards, resulting in a significant boost in the productivity of manufacturing wooden ships. The first circular saw was invented in Holland, but due to the difficulty of creating bearings and saw blades, it was not successful.

Why do we need hobbies or interests?
